Jamie Vardy has been asked to delay his switch to Arsenal as Leicester make a counter offer in a final attempt to keep him for the 2016/17 campaign.
However, Mirror reports the Premier League champions will move for Watford striker Troy Deeney if they lose Vardy even though they still hope to keep their top scorer.
Arsenal are confident of landing Vardy though, with striker Olivier Giroud claiming he has been told the England international wants to join the Gunners, referring to the switch as “good news” despite the threat to his own position.
Arsenal have made it clear they will meet the £20m release clause and offered Vardy a contract believed to be worth £120,000-a-week, which is double his current wages at the Foxes.
Arsene Wenger’s men were hoping to do a medical and complete negotiations before the Euros begin as England manager Roy Hodgson does not want transfer talk disrupting his plans at the competition.
It would be a setback for Claudio Ranieri’s men to lose their 24 goal top scorer and they fear losing him would send a bad signal to N’Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez which is why they are still fighting.
Although, England legend Gary Lineker reckons it shouldn’t be hard to swing the deal Leicester’s way…
