EKO Atlantic City is set to witness a maiden Beach Olympics as 10 clubs drawn from Lagos metropolis are bracing up for the biggest and most fascinating social and competitive beach sporting event.
According to Vanguard online news, the two-day energy sapping event billed for 3rd – 4th March, 2017 are expected to attract over 300 athletes and officials as well as over 3000 spectators. Organisers said 15 events grouped into three major sports namely; sand sports, speed sports and strength sports will feature.
Under the Sand Sports, we have ; beach volleyball, wheel barrow race, high jump, long jump and triple jump while in Speed sports are; 50m Sprint, 100m sprint, 50m backward sprint, 50m sack race and 4x50m relay and the Strength sports have beach put, sumo wresting, truck tyre race, 50m drag race and tug of war. Events Director, Dapo Onamusi said the Lagos Beach Olympics is a departure from the normal beach event which usually feature a particular sporting events like beach soccer and volleyball.
According to the event manager, the major objectives of the competition are; to involve grass root talents in a global event, to create a platform for effective representation of youths in different communities and to discover talents to represent countries on a global scale
“The normal beach sporting event we used to have is tied to one event, but in this case, we have created a variety of sports, about 15 of them scheduled to last for two days.”
