Beauty they say is in the eye of the beholder and unfortunately, sometimes society dictates what is beauty even though it may not apply to everyone’s standard. In parts of East and Southern Africa, people with Albinisim have been attacked, abducted and killed.

Now Kenya is hoping to change all that with how some people view albinos as it held the first Mr & Miss Albinism beauty pageant on Africa Human Rights Day. The event was organized by the Albinism Society of Kenya (ASK) who are hoping the pageant will promote the inclusion of people with albinism and reduce the stigma, alienation and even physical abuse they face in the region.

Earlier this year, a special UN envoy declared people with albinism “an endangered people group facing a risk of systemic extinction over time if nothing is done to stem the tide.”

With such development, it is clear that people born this way will face less discrimination and live in peace as functional and healthy members of the society.
