They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away but does an egg a day keep the doctor away as well? Well, we are about to find that out. The major nutrients contained in eggs are vitamin A, vitamin B2 vitamin B5, folate, vitamin B12, phosphorus and selenium. Eggs are commonly found and purchased everywhere as they are one of the most affordable sources of protein in meals. Eggs can be prepared by a variety of methods, from frying to boiling, poaching, scrambling and all sorts. Eggs are usually eaten to compliment the main dish and serve as a source of protein for the meal.  Some have argued that eating more than one egg in a day is not harmful to the body and can be very beneficial, while others have disagreed based on the amount of cholesterol that is contained in eggs. However, the good news is that the cholesterol contained in eggs is not the bad type that raises the level of cholesterol in the blood, it is actually the good type also known as High-Density Lipoprotein. Here are some other health benefits of eggs that you did not know:

    • Good for the eyes: Egg yolks contain an impressive amount of vitamin A, lutein and zeaxanthin which are nutrients that are essential for the maintenance of good eyesight. They help to counteract the ageing processes in the eyes and reduce the risks of macular degeneration of the eyes and cataracts.
    • Good for heart health: Studies have shown that eggs contain phospholipids that perform good roles in decreasing blood pressure and improve vascular, memory and cognitive functions. This means that the cholesterol present in eggs does not actually affect the heart, instead, it helps in its maintenance.
    • Energy production: Since eggs contain a good number of nutrients, they are quite beneficial in producing energy for the body. A medium sized egg contains about 5.53g of protein and 63 calories. All the nutrients present in eggs perform important roles in producing energy for the body. So, they next time you are feeling tired and hungry, try eating an egg and see what it does.
    • Aids in weight loss: Eggs help people to feel full and less hungry for longer periods of time, thereby reducing food cravings and at the same time delivering enough of needed vitamins and minerals to their body. If you are on a weight loss program, try eating eggs instead of unhealthy foods when you are hungry, they will make you feel full and curb the hunger pangs for a longer while than chips.
